MultiMatch

A matching game to support learning in any subject area.

We are preparing to release this app shortly for iOS... current estimate April 2017

With MathTappers: MultiMatch, you, and your students can create matching games to support consolidation, mastery, and fluency in almost every content area (math, science, language arts, history, PE,…).  It is a form of problem based learning—with the problem being: How do I create a game to help someone learn? In the app, you choose a MultiMatch ‘deck’ of cards and a collection of cards from the deck appears on the screen for you to select sets and remove. Each of the cards can have multiple faces and be used in multiple sets.  A sample ‘Factors’ game is included, but it is just an exemplar—the greatest learning occurs when you create your own.

Computer-based games for learning
  • Most apps use an instructionist approach, integrating content to be learned with the game
  • Design determines the efficacy for learning
  • Better to have students designing and constructing their own games:
    • contextualized and authentic learning
    • engaged and active learning
    • Promotes creative thinking, reasoning, story-telling, visual designing, problem-solving and audience awareness skills
  • More research is needed on interaction between students and game design, students and design-based computing, and students and peers during collaborative design

The MathTappers:MultiMatch game
  • You choose table size: 3x3, 4x4, 5x5 or ?  – then a random selection of sets are placed
  • A set may be 1, 2, 3, 4 or more cards
  • Cards may have multiple ‘faces’
  • Tap to select/deselect, tap and hold to enlarge a card and swipe to see other faces
  • Goal is to find sets of related cards – they disappear when a complete set is selected
  • If a card does not belong to the developing set, all selected cards are deselected

Creating a Deck
  • MathTappers:Multimatch is a creating and sharing app that allows anyone to create, play and share matching decks on any topic
  • Students can be challenged to create a deck to help someone learn a topic
  • Deck design process:
    • Identify the problem (topic to be learned)
    • Design/plan a set of related cards that indicate mastery of the topic
    • Create images for each card
    • Create a set of introductory slides telling the purpose of the game, and identifying the types of sets that are presented in the deck
    • Create a text file identifying the relationships (cards-images, sets-cards)
  • A web-based helper app will be available on this page shortly to prepare the deck to be imported into the MultiMatch app
